Last week on her Show Me Something podcast, Sophie Cunningham stirred up controversy with her comments on Paige Bueckers. “I love Paige [Bueckers] to death, do not get me wrong … I think she’s a hell of a player and would love to play with her one day, but those refs were giving her every whistle last night. Like you literally couldn’t touch her, couldn’t touch her. If you’re going to do that, then give it to our guards.” A lot has been said this season about Paige being a “flopper,” but if anything, tonight showed once again that the problem might not be Paige; it might just be the officiating.

Against the Fever, Paige dropped 16 points on 6-of-19 shooting, with just four trips to the free-throw line. She added 5 rebounds and 8 assists to her stat sheet. Dallas once led by as many as 17 points but had to hold off a fierce 19-3 Fever run to escape with an 80-81 win. Cunningham’s frustration, though, wasn’t about the narrow win; it stemmed from the number of fouls Paige managed to draw throughout the game. Paige drew several hand-check fouls from both Lexie Hull and Cunningham, who combined for eight fouls in that game, per CBS Sports. But that wasn’t the case tonight against the Los Angeles Sparks.

With roughly seven minutes left in the second quarter, Paige found herself double-teamed by Cameron Brink and Rickea Jackson. A clear shove from Brink sent her to the floor, leading to a turnover for Dallas as the ball rolled out of bounds. So much for the “Paige flopping” narrative! But if you still think that wasn’t a foul, just look at what happened next. Coach Koclanes, usually the calmest guy in the arena, stormed toward the officials and picked up his first technical of the season. You know it’s serious when even Koclanes loses his cool!

“Everyone is entitled to their own unique personal opinion,” Paige said in response to Cunningham’s comments. And to further show that Paige isn’t a flopper, let’s rewind to the very game Sophie mentioned on her podcast. During a battle for a rebound, Paige collided with Lexie Hull, leading to Hull falling on top of her and causing a hard hit to Paige’s back. And Paige was already suffering from a back issue, which even saw her miss a game against Liberty. Yet, instead of calling for a foul or asking to be subbed out, Paige pushed through and kept playing; a true testament to her mentality.

The Wings may have just 9 wins under their belt this season, but Paige always brings her best against the Sparks. Last time they faced off, she poured in a career-high 29 points. Tonight? She created history by scoring the most points by a rookie in a single game in WNBA history with 44 points. And there were more in store!

Paige Bueckers creates another WNBA record

Breaking records might just be second nature to Paige Bueckers at this point. She recently became the fastest rookie in WNBA history to reach 500 points and 100 assists, surpassing Clark with ease. She’s also the only rookie this season with multiple 30-point games. But now, she’s added another major record to her growing list.

According to Joey Mistretta, Paige Bueckers has officially surpassed Cynthia Cooper for the third-longest streak of consecutive double-digit scoring games by a rookie in WNBA history. She’s now at 29 straight games. Wondering who the other two are? A’ja Wilson tops the list with 33, followed by Candace Parker with 32.
