Serena Williams, bid adieu to tennis in the previous season’s US Open. It was the Croatian-Australian tennis player, Ajla Tomljanović, who spoiled the 23-time Grand Slam champion’s final dance in a jam-packed Arthur Ashe Stadium that was cheering for Serena. Tomljanovic recently opened up about her assessment of their US Open clash. The 29-year-old said that she didn’t really get a chance to talk to Williams after her victory. However, she added that she thought the former tennis ace didn’t really expect to lose that match.
Ajla Tomljanovic gives her own assessment of Serena Williams’ farewell match.
Ajla recently in an interview detailed her victory over Serena Williams on the eve of her farewell match. She said that she felt strange initially after she was put against the American tennis legend. However, she was also glad as she got the opportunity to compete against “the greatest of all time” for the last time.
Later, the 29-year-old player was asked about her post-match interview.
She gave a classy tribute to the ‘Queen of the Court’. Despite her remarkable win, Tomljanović gave the stage to Serena on that sad but celebratory occasion.
Tomljanovic said that she wished she had more of a chance to talk to the former tennis ace.
She wanted to say a few words to Williams directly, but then she realized it was her moment. The Aussie star added, “I don’t think she expected to lose. I think she believed till the last moment that she would win, not just this match, maybe the whole thing. But it was her night. Whether she won or lost and I just wanted that to be known.”
This is not the first time the Australian WTA star has spoken about her win over Serena Williams.
Even in the Netflix documentary, ‘Break Point,’ Tomljanovic opened up about her underdog moment as she said nobody wanted her to win when she played against Serena.
