‘Chrissie Might Be Pregnant’ – Martina Navratilova Once Used Subtle Humor to Overcome a Brutal Defeat to Chris Evert


During their illustrious careers, Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert played some memorable matches against each other. Their matches were an event to look forward to for tennis fans across the globe. One such match took place at the 1981 Murjani WTA Championships in Amelia Island. They were up against each other in the final of that tournament.  The match was expected to be a close encounter between the star players. However, to everyone’s surprise, Evert was dominating from start to end. Navratilova reacted to this defeat in an interesting way.

After the match, Navratilova used subtle humor to overcome her defeat. She said, “When they introduced Chris, they said she was a virtuoso on clay. She showed them they were right." Further, she went on to add, “I hope when I come back here, Chrissie might be pregnant.”

Despite their strong rivalry on the court, the two were good friends off the court. Over the last few years, they have been together on chat shows on multiple occasions, talking about their friendship.

Navratilova praised Evert for bravely talking about her cancer battle. Earlier this year, Evert was diagnosed with stage 1 ovarian cancer. Recently, she completed her sixth and final chemotherapy session to treat this disease.

Her rivalry with Chris Evert brought a lot of good name to the women’s sport. They played 80 matches against each other, out of which 60 were finals only. Overall, Navratilova holds a 43-37 edge in their head-to-head meetings.
