Spain’s Top 6 Unmissable Cycling Climbs: Simon Warren’s Recommendations

Simon Warren, author of "100 Great Cycling Climbs of Spain", shared insights on Spain's most challenging cycling climb destination. Her books perfectly summarize trail details in the UK, France, Italy, and other places. Recently, she talked about Vuelta a España, an annual competition in Spain featuring the most mesmerizing hiking trails around the country.

Alto de l’Angliru, Northern Spain

From La Vega, the initial route is comparatively less challenging; however, the trick comes next, as the dangerous steeps will keep challenging your capabilities. The trail is between 20% to 24% gradient, making it an ideal scenario to think twice before starting the journey.

Sa Calobra, Mallorca

The 9.7km based trail is much easier to ride. To reach the baseline, cyclists must descend to its starting point and start climbing. To get the most peaceful experience on this rocky landscape, cyclists must begin early in the morning to avoid the crowd of tourists.

Alto del Gamoniteiro, Northern Spain

The Gomoniteiro is relatively less challenging and renowned at the same time. Though it resembles the Angliru as it is situated on the same mountain, very few are acquainted with its beauty. The comparatively easy hiking trail offers two routes to reach the destination, which is 16.4 km away from the starting point.

La Bola del Mundo, Sistema Central

The 3.1 km-based trail will deliver an easy and demanding hiking experience. Though the initial route will be relaxing, you will find yourself on a challenging course with a 20% slope and a trail covered with debris. The last 500 meters will be the hardest; however, the eye-soothing beauty of the surroundings will be a treat for your eyes.

Roque de los Muchachos, La Palma

This ride can be considered one of the most beautiful climbs in the world. The first 1,500 meters will take you through the forest full of natural species. After that, you will discover yourself amidst the clouds. The broad horizon will be the route to the Mirador de los Andenes. Beyond that, you can find the main summit after 3 km.

Pico Veleta, Andalucia

Pico Veleta stands 515 meters above Cime de la Bonette and provides an out-of-world experience. The highest point of the track is at an elevation of 3375 meters. Undoubtedly, the path will take you through the easy and challenging routes, but your hard work will be paid off at the end of the trail.
