Unexpected Virus Kills a Horse Leaving Equestrian World in Shock

The death of a horse on March 31 in Opglabbeek, Belgium from the EHV-1 virus has compelled the FEI to take action for preventing its spread.
Statement of FEI official on Virus outbreak
“All blocked horses have been isolated and will be prevented from attending any FEI events until they have fulfilled certain health requirements which are imposed in order to minimise any potential transmission of the virus, both to their own horses and the wider horse population."
Precautionary measures advised by FEI
Compulsory biosecurity precautions advised by FEI are the isolation of horses for at least a time of 21 days and monitoring of rectal temperature twice a day with routine EHV-1 tests.
