“Those Are Not for You”: Curvy Surfer Girl Began the Surfing Movement To Encourage Women of All Sizes

Usually, surfing is considered a sport for mainly skinny and lean body types mainly female surfers. However, the awareness regarding this issue has been brought to light by surfer Elizabeth Sneed. Usually, lean body types help to balance better on the surfboard. But you can't judge athletic ability by body type and that's where Sneed comes to support the girls with curvy body types and encourage them for surfing. Here are some experiences shared by Sneed while her conversation with Yahoo's body image series, It Figures.

In her conversation with Yahoo, Sneed shared about the disparities she faced at first, “You just are implanted with this idea that once you have a certain body type, you no longer do those things."


"Need to look like this to do it"

Pointing out the stereotypical lean body type for surfing, Sneed further added, "Those are not for you. And for you to rejoin the acceptable masses, you need to look like this to do it.”

A step to motivate all body-types for surfing!

Elizabeth Sneed started an Instagram page "Curvy Surfer Girl" in 2020 with the motto to make surfers feel comfortable, confident, and uplifted. This initiative also helped Sneed to help herself.
