NASCAR Fans Divided over Denny Hamlin’s Feud with Tony Stewart’s Driver
NASCAR
A video posted by NASCAR on NBC has reignited the debate over the 2021 incident between Denny Hamlin and Chase Briscoe at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The two drivers collided twice in the final laps, costing them both a chance to win the race.
Conflict between Denny and Briscoe
The incident occurred during the two-lap overtime restart of the 2021 Verizon 200 at the Brickyard. Hamlin was leading the race with Briscoe on the outside entering turn 1. However, as the cars navigated the corner, Hamlin lost his grip, pushing Briscoe wide into the grass. Briscoe managed to regain control and rejoin the race, albeit receiving a black flag for cutting the corner. Briscoe later admitted that he did not know about the penalty at the time.
The Aftermath
As the race progressed to turn 10, Briscoe made contact from the backside of Hamlin's Toyota, causing Hamlin to lose control of his #11 car and hampering his race day. Unfortunately, the impact also disrupted Briscoe's car, leaving him unable to brake and ending his race prematurely. The two drivers exchanged words on the pit road after the race, and also took jabs at each other during post-race interviews. Hamlin pointed fingers at Tony Stewart's driver, alleging that the wreck was intentional.
The resurfaced video was posted by NASCAR, two years after the incident. The video triggered a flurry of reactions from NASCAR fans, who were divided over the nature of the incident. Some sided with Hamlin, arguing that Briscoe should have backed off after receiving the penalty. Others defended Briscoe, saying that Hamlin was at fault for pushing him off the track in the first place.
