How is Bubba Wallace's Social Initiative Promoting Diversity a Boon for NASCAR?
NASCAR
Bubba Wallace is one of the most polarizing drivers in NASCAR at the moment. On the other hand, he is the only African-American driver in NASCAR right now.
Recently, Wallace hosted a Block Party, where plenty of African American people showed up to celebrate their community. Safe to say, Wallace’s initiative is actually benefiting NASCAR to be more inclusive.
Wallace’s initiatives
In 2020, Wallace urged NASCAR to ban the Confederate flag at NASCAR events, as it made many fans uncomfortable. NASCAR listened to Wallace and banned the flag. In the same year, Wallace also took part in the 'Black Lives Matter’ movement. Although he received backlash from many fans, he showed tremendous courage.
Bubba’s Block Party
Before the Chicago race, Wallace hosted “Bubba’s Block Party”. This party is mainly for the whole African-American community; it also celebrates their culture, food, businesses, music, and many more. Almost 4,000 people turned up for this event. Talented rapper Lupe Fiasco also performed on stage and entertained the crowd.
Wallace’s block party attracted many people and many of them probably watched the race on Sunday as well. Wallace is also attracting many African-American kids to take an interest in NASCAR. At the moment, he is the only African American driver. However, NASCAR could see plenty of African-American drivers in the future, thanks to Wallace. Certainly, Wallace’s various social initiatives are helping NASCAR to be more inclusive.
Wallace talks about inclusivity
Recently Wallace talked to reporters about inclusivity in NASCAR, saying, “We want to change for the better and allow all ages and races ... to be a part of our sport with no boundaries, no hindrance there… That's showing that we care and that we're inclusive… Are we going to get every avenue right? No. But it's a non-stop process."
