While Mickelson has a long-standing habit of making controversial statements, his recent claim was relatively much softer. The 52-year-old has been praising the LIV Golf Series ever since he joined the roster for a reported contract worth $200 million.
Ahead of the LIV Golf’s season finale in Miami, Mickelson effused praise for the Saudi-backed series on making considerable progress over the last six to seven months. "It’s pretty remarkable how far LIV Golf has come in the last six, seven months. I don’t think anybody can disagree with that,” Phil said.
Fans were quick to show their displeasure and ridiculed Mickelson and other golfers for their so-called sweet words. Here’s a selection of those tweets.
Phil loved playing for the PGA Tour for over three decades and he will miss it. But he needed this new format to play better and change his game on the global level. Mickelson joining LIV was not a surprise for anyone, as he was supporting the new tour since the beginning.
The 6-time Major Championship winner has been in a war of words with recently crowned World No. 1 Rory McIlroy in the LIV vs PGA debate. McIlroy mentioned that the “us versus them” conflict had spiraled out of hand to a leading newspaper daily.
“If I’m just looking at LIV Golf and where we are today to where we were six, seven months ago and people are saying this is dead in the water, and we’re past that, and here we are today, a force in the game that’s not going away,” Phil said.
Mickelson also claimed the LIV series was making news in other countries and therefore extending the sport’s popularity across the world. He said the quality of talent was “moving professional golf throughout the world and [creating an] excitement level in the countries around the world.”
