Has a pair of cleats ever meant this much to a city? That’s a yes if it’s Patrick Mahomes‘ cleats! FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education) shared that it presented Kansas City‘s beloved QB’s game-worn ‘15 and FARE’ cleats to Children’s Mercy as well as The University of Kansas Health System during a back-to-school event held earlier this week.

LK Snacks, which is a top 9 allergen-free meat snack brand, purchased those cleats at the auction and donated one each to both the health care systems in the city. They were presented by FARE CEO, Sung Poblete. “This moment is a celebration of what’s possible when purpose-driven organizations come together to make a difference,” said Dr. Poblete. “We’re deeply grateful to Brittany and Patrick Mahomes and their 15 and the Mahomies Foundation, to LK snacks, and to the allergy departments at Children’s Mercy and The University of Kansas Health System.”

As usual, Mahomes’ wife, Brittany Mahomes, was proud of their latest achievement. She went ahead and shared FARE’s post on her Instagram story. FARE’s post read: “The cleats were first worn as part of the NFL’s My Cause My Cleats campaign and later auctioned to support 15 and FARE, a joint initiative between FARE and the 15 and the Mahomies Foundation. Thanks to LK Snacks, who purchased and donated the cleats, each hospital received one as a symbol of shared commitment to children and families managing food allergies.” The collaboration, however, isn’t too surprising.

After all, who else will understand the importance of resources needed to manage food allergies if not Mahomes? Brittany and Patrick Mahomes’ son, Bronze, is severely allergic to nuts. In August 2023, the couple tried to carefully introduce their son to the food because their older daughter, Sterling, was allergic to peanuts, milk, and eggs. But despite being as careful as possible, Bronze ended up in the emergency room.

They started off by adding a little bit of powdered nuts to his bottle to see how Bronze’s body would react. Within the first 30 minutes, he felt irritable and developed hives. But Bronze also started developing some welts on his face, and that’s when they rushed to emergency care. The Mahomes felt lucky the doctors were able to help them, but at the same time, they understood how the issue needed more attention.

Owing to the scary incidents with their children, Brittany and Patrick Mahomes prepared for the future by keeping medications at home.

Patrick and Brittany Mahomes aim to raise awareness about food allergies

While Sterling and Bronze both have food allergies, the symptoms they have are quite different. In an interview last year, Brittany explained: “With Sterling, it was completely different from with Bronze, and with Sterling’s, she was just vomiting and sneezing. And in a sense, that could be any sickness like a stomach bug. So, with Sterling, it was vomiting, sneezing, red itchy eyes.”

“And then with Bronze it was a little bit more scary, I felt like. Because with Sterling, she was vomiting; she was getting it all out. And then she showed progression pretty quickly after that, that she was a little bit better. But with Bronze, he just began to get a little bit fussy.”

And in order to manage their food allergies, Brittany Mahomes has tried to make wise snacking choices for her kids. Applesauce pouches or fruits are a big hit, in addition to more suitable allergen-friendly choices. However, she hopes more companies begin to create safer options for those in need. The Mahomes wish their message receives wider attention. After all, it is a personal battle for them.
